So, if you had asked me before this month if I believed a February “slump” was normal and real, I might have rolled my eyes and shrugged. Honestly, never before in my 30-some years have I ever recognized the very real battle that February can be!
As I look back over this month of victories and struggles, it comes to my attention that this isn’t a “new” problem. If you look through the narrative of Scripture you find countless stories of individuals who set out to do something amazing, something God-inspired and ordained, and then were met with a “February” time. (Moses, anyone?)
This month alone, I’ve dealt with personal struggles that had me questioning my commitment to the Lord, parenting struggles that had me paging through every parenting book we’ve collected since our oldest was an infant, friendship challenges that reminded me why I teach on the struggles of relationships in ministry so often, and what seemed to be a brick wall in our homeschooling journey that brought me full-circle to the idea of which form of education our kids actually needed.
It’s February. BUT… March (and SPRING!) are coming!
As I look back, this month has been a time of growth and reflection. I’ve learned so much and seen the Lord stretch me in ways I wasn’t prepared for, but so desperately needed. Here’s a few things I learned, in no particular order:
No form of education is perfect. I know this. I was just reminded of this in a big way this month. We’ve been homeschooling for 10 years and I STILL don’t have it figured out. I recognized this year that most Februarys have me clicking through multiple curriculum sites, looking for that “perfect fit”. It doesn’t exist. No matter how you are choosing to educate your children, just know that they need love, consistency, discipline, and a healthy dose of GRACE. You’re doing fine, mama.
Walmart online grocery shopping wins HANDS DOWN over Aldis. Guys, I’ve been doing online grocery shopping since last fall and it’s magical. Our budget has been stretching a little thin in other areas, so I decided to try going back to Aldis because, #savings. Epic fail. I had to shop myself, bag my own groceries, load my own car, drag a hungry kid around, and go home to deal with it all. And I saved $10. That’s IT. Never again.
Friendships can develop in amazing, unexpected ways. So this is another one that I’ve experienced and known in other seasons of my life, but when the same evidences of God’s hand at work behind the scenes shows up again, it’s a beautiful reminder of His heart for me. Its been a long time since I’ve felt like I “belonged”. And yes, there’s the whole “our home is in heaven” deal, but honestly, God has created us for community and that’s a HERE and NOW kinda deal. Over the month of February, God has placed some new friendships in my life and they are blossoming and I’m over-the-moon about it.
How about YOU? Did you have a February of mountain-top highs, or one of deep valleys? Have you been watching God stir some things around in your heart and space, wondering what in the world He’s up to? What’s been the BIGGEST surprise of your month?
One of my favorite things this month was leading women through the monthly FREE live group coaching session. We spoke about relationships and the messiness of it all and how to do it well. It’s not an easy task at ALL and one we need to constantly take before the throne of grace for wisdom and empowerment to do what God asks us to do. I’d love for you to join us next month! We’re going to be talking about transitions in this ministry life. You can register here to get more info as we get closer to that date!
Don’t forget about the free resource I made for you to evaluate your own month’s end. God encourages us to look back before we march ahead (see what I did there?). Love His Word and the examples we see there. Join me and use the Look Back resource for your own February Reflection!
